How to combat the cost of living
With COVID creating the fastest rate of inflation for 30 years, many people are now faced with a cost of living that their current salary simply doesn’t cover. With countless tips online about how to reduce fuel and grocery bills, plus growing concerns about spiralling rental increases and unsustainable mortgage rates, an increasing number of people are struggling to know what to do next.
The answer – Secure your future with expert support from Learning People
It’s widely known that a promotion with your current employer pays less than a career change – but change to many is naturally scary. So, how do you even start to map out your new career and new life – and what new skills will you need, and what skills do you already have that employers want?
How to start planning your career change
For more than a decade Learning People have helped people of all ages, from all backgrounds successfully change and advance their careers. And with a 97% employment success we’re confident in guiding you from enrolment to employment into an array of financially secure industries – all in a lot less time than you might expect.
Forget imposter syndrome – what are you good at and what do you enjoy?
People often talk themselves out of pursuing something new, simply because they don’t believe they can do it. But the reality is that many people from non-technical backgrounds already possess the transferable skills that employers desperately need – but what are they?
We all develop and enhance various (what are known as) soft skills without knowing it. The most requested by employers are communication, collaboration, adaptability, problem-solving, initiative, and leadership.
Employers everywhere are looking for transferable interpersonal skills to ensure candidates have the adaptability and flexibility required to slot into a team seamlessly, and now realise that technical abilities can be taught – but finding people with suitable social and psychological characteristics is much more challenging.
Soft skills defined
Problem Solving
A passion for problem-solving is one of the most obvious transferable skills for anyone wanting to work in IT. When challenged with finding creative ways to tackle challenges across various technologies and environments, you’ll need the desire to keep up with emerging trends and think differently to solve problems.
Communication and Collaboration
As an IT or project professional you’ll communicate and collaborate with stakeholders across multiple departments daily, which means adjusting your language to suit your audience – which enables you to explain both your findings and solutions while understanding the viewpoints of others.
Organisation and planning
Anyone working in a corporate environment will know the mantra, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” How you manage your time and prioritise your tasks will determine your success in any role during your career.
Motivation and enthusiasm
Your motivation and enthusiasm plays a crucial role in any type of organisation and is something that Learning People help students recognise and supercharge from the outset of your journey with us.
How much training will I need to do and how long will it take?
Information Technology (IT)
If you’re comfortable with computers and have a natural curiosity to ask questions (and seek answers), then a fresh start in tech should be a serious consideration.
If you’re starting your tech career from scratch (which many Learning People students are), your first step will be the CompTIA A+ certification, which is the industry standard for launching a career in IT – and takes 120 hours to complete.
This certification also acts as the launchpad for Cyber, Networking, and Cloud – where certifications take a lot less time to complete. For example, the Network+ is a mere 40 hours, Security+ 40 hours, and AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate also just 40 hours.
