Celebrate women in STEM on Ada Lovelace Day

Ada Lovelace Day was founded in dedication to Ada Lovelace, the first computer programmer, to celebrate the global achievements of women in STEM. The second Tuesday of every October marks this memorable day, founded by technologist Suw Charman-Anderson back in 2009.

The mission of Ada Lovelace day  is clear; increase the profile of women in STEM and share their stories in the hope that more girls and women will be inspired to pursue STEM careers.

Ada Lovelace passed away aged just 36, back in 1853. Years later in 1980, the US Department of Defence names a computer language after her and she’s received a number of posthumous accolades for her contributions to STEM.

To this day, there are some shocking STEM statistics in relation to women working in these fields. Women only make up 23% of those working in STEM roles in the UK, as well as the UK having the lowest percentage of female representation in engineering professions in Europe. It makes you think, why aren’t women progressing in these tech fields?
