Dan Roberts | student testimonial
We catch up with Learning People student Dan Roberts who found employment during the pandemic. Dan has studied and passed the PRINCE2® Foundation and PRINCE2® Practitioner.
Tell us why you enquired with Learning People.
I received an email from you through TotalJobs during the 2020 lockdown. At that time, I was out of work since my contract had finished in December 2019. The job market was flat and part of my previous work had included working on projects. I knew that some official training would be beneficial.
Were there any specific skills you were looking to gain or develop by enrolling with Learning People?
It was all about badging up my knowledge and experience and being able to know and use the common language and terminology of project management. I knew other people were getting attention from employers and I wasn’t, because I didn’t have the qualifications.
Was there a particular reason you chose to enrol with Learning People, and did you speak to any other educators or training providers?
It was mainly due to being ‘open book’. The learning platform allowed me to do everything in my own time and not get in the way of job hunting and my voluntary work that I do for the NHS.
Tell us what the career consultation phone call was like for you.
I was recommended the full collection of project management training, and a recruiter friend of mine actually advised me not to try and do PRINCE2 as they thought it would be too technical. But I thought I do need this and discussed it with my wife and wanted to enhance and validate my skills.
Tell us about your experience of learning online using our system.
I’d not done any online learning before this and I’m dyslexic. The last time I was in education was at school. It had its challenges for me, but at the same time I found that using all the tools enabled me to retain what I needed. My brother in law is a lecturer in project management and has a PHD in project management and was impressed with what I’d learnt and how much I knew.
Were you able to gain support from our StudentCare™ team when you needed it?
Yeah, it came to a point when I wondered if I was taking too long on the training, but they assured me I was learning at the right pace for me and I was taking everything on. They were there when I needed them.
How did you get on with the practice exams / test preparation?
I sat them a couple of times and found a way of making it work for me by using the infographics.
Tell us about your experience of working with our Career Services team, and what did you find most useful?
They were great. Robyn was brilliant. They could not have been more helpful and supportive. Robyn helped me with loads of interview questions and preparation.
How did enrolling with Learning People affect your career (new job / promotion etc)?
I wouldn’t have the job I have now without the training and career services in my corner.
Tell us about your new job.
I’m absolutely loving it. It’s a multisite role and I’m working with a lot of different people. It has its challenges, but wouldn’t be interesting if it was easy. It’s a brand new role and I can make it my own. I can put things into practice that are good for the workplace and I wouldn’t have been able to do this without what I’ve learnt.
What has been the best part of your Learning People experience?
Passing the exams was great. I did it for myself, so it was a big plus and a massive confidence booster. It told me that I do have value and I am able to do stuff and I do know what I’m talking about. It gave me the confidence I needed.
What advice would you give to somebody who is thinking about enrolling with Learning People?
Make sure it’s what you want to do and it’s right for you. If you don’t get what you need from it then it won’t work. If you put the work/effort in you can’t go wrong. Especially with the support Learning People give.
