Matteo Imeri | code student testimonial

We catch up with Learning People graduate Matteo Imeri who successfully changed his career post pandemic from mechanical engineer to junior full stack developer.

Matteo studied and completed the Diploma in Full Stack Software Development.

Tell us why you enquired with Learning People.

I was looking for a coding course and found LP online. I noticed the diploma in Full Stack Software development and asked for a phone call. It was important for me to get a recognised qualification.

Were there any specific skills you were looking to gain or develop by enrolling with Learning People?

I wanted to learn more about software development. It’s something I’ve touched on before when I was a music producer and sound engineer, so I used a lot of software. Some of my friends were able to modify the software they were using for their own needs and it sounded really complicated. One of them said to me, it can be difficult at the beginning, but once you learn to code there’s so much you can do with it. And once I saw the training and qualification on your site, I decided that these were the skills I wanted to have.

Was there a particular reason you chose to enrol with Learning People, and did you speak to any other educators or training providers?

Learning People had really good reviews online and very strong career support. Being a career changer coming from a completely different background I thought this was something I needed once I finished the training.  I didn’t have anyone to point me in the right direction apart from one friend in the US and one in the Netherlands who work in the industry. So, having someone to help me with my CV and understand the industry was a huge help. At the time, my job was a mechanical engineer, so I had no idea about tech companies and what they were looking for.

Tell us what the career consultation phone call was like for you.

Very good. The person I spoke to explained everything about the course and how Learning People would support me throughout the training process, the skills I would gain and the chances of getting a job. She also made sure I would have enough time to complete the course by asking about my home life, work and personal commitments. It was really reassuring.

Tell us about your experience of learning online using our system.

Very straightforward and easy to use. I could see how I was tracking and if I was falling behind or ahead of schedule. All the tools were very well explained too. This was my first experience of learning online and it was all very good.

Were you able to gain support from our StudentCare™ team when you needed it?

Yes, I emailed StudentCare to access a webinar and had a response within 1 hour.

Did you utilise any of the course mentoring – if so, how did it help you?

Yes, for every project there were 3 sessions with the mentor. I was very lucky as my mentor has been coding since the 1970’s. He was very experienced and was great at making sure I was on track. He also helped me gain insight into the industry telling me about how to approach different companies and what the work would be like. I was very pleased with my mentor and the advice.

How did you get on with the projects?

Every 3 months there’s a project and you have to reach the requirements to pass, which is really applying the language you’ve learnt into a practical project.

Tell us about your experience of working with our Career Services team, and what did you find most useful?

Very well. Robyn was my consultant, she’s absolutely brilliant, she helped me with my CV and everytime I had an interview she was very supportive and positive. She helped me realise that you will find the company that’s right for me. It really helped me to push and find the right placement.

How did enrolling with Learning People affect your career (new job / promotion etc)?

I was a mechanical engineer for 20 years and after Covid I noticed the industry slowing down. Enrolling has meant a complete change of career with all new skills.

Tell us about your new job / promotion.

I’m working for DBD Distribution who decided to go paper free around 10 years ago. They have an in-house dev team, two back end developers and 1 front end. I’m working in between both teams currently and they want me to move into a full stack developer position. It’s a very good company, I feel lucky.

What has been the best part of your Learning People experience?

The Career Services team. They really helped and used to tag me for different jobs nearby that came up on LinkedIn. For me, the Career Services team are key players at Learning People.

What advice would you give to somebody who is thinking about enrolling with Learning People?

Go through what you want to do with the career consultants and use the service. It’s brilliant. If you’re doing a career change you don’t have any network or connections and having someone with all the knowledge of industry is essential . I’m pretty sure if I didn’t have Learning People helping me with my LinkedIn and CV and virtual seminars by now I’d still be looking for a job. I had people with more experience than me asking how I got a job so quickly.
