Naomi Pearse | Code Student Testimonial
We catch up with Learning People graduate Naomi Pearse who changed career from Interior Designer to Software Developer…
Tell us why you enquired with Learning People
I was working in the design industry and no longer felt happy with the career. It didn’t feel like there was any further progression for me, so I decided to go into tech. I started looking for a course in front-end development and I noticed that Learning People provided courses in the subject that are very much tailored to the career and getting the job.
Were there any specific skills you were looking to gain or develop by enrolling with Learning People?
I did have a vague interest and knowledge about front-end and basic front-end technologies, but I didn’t know anything about the additional skills you would need, like the libraries and the frameworks. So I chose to enrol into the Full Stack Pro Developer course so that I had a fully rounded knowledge of both front and back-end.
Was there a particular reason you chose to enrol with Learning People, and did you speak to any other educators or training providers?
I looked at a few classroom based courses but they would have been full time. Learning People felt more tailored towards career changing – plus, the self-paced learning was more suited to me. I also couldn’t see any other provider that was as in-depth, and well organised, or with the same level of career services support.
Tell us what the career consultation phone call was like for you
The career consultant was very supportive throughout the whole process of making sure that I found the right course for me and what I should expect from it.
Tell us about your experience of learning online using our system
I hadn’t done any online learning before and the system gave me a lot more content than I expected it to. The books were also really helpful in supporting the course content too.
Did you utilise any of the course mentoring – if so, how did it help you?
I found the mentoring really helpful when I started working on the projects in the course. They helped me to plan and bring them to life, and if I was really stuck on a problem they were really great at helping me overcome them.
How did you get on with the coding projects?
The projects were really fun as well as great practice. The criteria was easy to follow and I’ve had really good feedback on them too.
Tell us about your experience of working with our Career Services team
They were just really patient. I can’t thank Robyn enough – she was just amazing. She was really patient, supportive, and encouraging too when I was feeling anxious or if I was doubting myself. The three phase Career Services process was great, especially because I was very eager to jump ahead and the structure stopped me from making a mess of it all. There’s so much to it and they know exactly what you need to do and in what order. Which is so important, otherwise you can find yourself just whirling randomly applying for jobs.
How did enrolling with Learning People affect your career?
I’ve managed to completely change my career in a year, which is beyond all of my expectations. But the one thing that really stands out for me is that I feel really prepared now, more prepared than I’ve ever felt, to navigate a career in general. I’ve learnt lifelong skills that I can now apply throughout my career, particularly with networking, which I very much avoided before.
